      Oiled Exxon Valdez bird

Oiled bird, Exxon Valdez, AlaskaRon photographed for 5 months from the day after the Exxon Valdez went aground in Prince William Sound  until cleanup operations ceased in the fall of 1989. His first week there was on assignment for Newsweek, which ran his images in the next edition. Other magazines hired him after that, and his graphic images from this incident were, and still are, published worldwide.

His most famous shot was the simple graphic above. This particular image had universal appeal as it showed a vignette of man's power, impact and care for nature. Variations of this shot have been published around the world in hundreds of magazines, books and publications, as well as appearing on MacNeil Lehrer News and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

One of the more "creative" uses for this image was an ad by Schwinn Bicycles, which showed what can happen if accidents aren't prevented with simple precautions (i.e. wear a bike helmet...).
