A single woman and her amazing dog, living in Alaska. Her multiple sclerosis tied her to a wheelchair for 19 years, but her dog lifted her spirits every day. There is no greater joy, with or without usable legs.
I heard about them while watching a 20/20 episode from my home not 5 miles away from theirs. I typed up a proposal and sent it off to only one magazine. Then I waited. Six months later, I got a reply. They wanted something within the month. I was leaving out of the country in two weeks, and it was December. I did the interviews and took the photos before I left, and submitted the story from the road (I mean, plane). Canine Companions for Independence (trainers of the dog) sent a congratulatory letter afterward on how accurate and inspiring the story was for them and all who use their dogs.
