The Winds that Stopped the Iditarod
The 2009 Iditarod began as all the others on a clear day in Anchorage, 25-30 degrees. About 3/4s of the way to Nome, reports came in of 50 mph winds, causing minus 35 windchill. Lance Mackey was already past the storm, on his way to his 4th win in Nome. But over 15 mushers were caught in the middle, and decided to wait it out together in a cramped shelter on the edge of the Bering Sea.
